Tenement Sound - PWD

Coming forth from the shadows, frequenting the hazier side of technology...

PWD is at the controls.
He's the man behind The Public Works Department and is responsible for hosting some of the most quality electronic acts to grace Melbourne soundsystems. Touring the more interesting spectrum of electronica is always a risky business, there's no guarantee that what looks good on paper is going to work in reality. But slowly and surely the Public Works brand has earned a reputation of always presenting the finest in experimental musical forms and putting on great parties for the crew with particular taste. PWD's own selections run deep, a hybrid mix of techno, acid and house, and are always blisteringly on point. If you haven't already make sure you check out his shows, both with The Public Works and now also with the Funf team, you'll be rewarded with a magic night of music. Although a busy man he's taken the time to craft us an insanely heady selection of raw jacking acid, morphing bass and swinging 4/4....too large!

Interview with PWD

TS. The Public Works is certainly gaining a stronger and stronger presence every year. What's been the key in helping you stand out in a somewhat over saturated party market.

P. I think there's been a few things. Techno's been on the up around the world, so that has certainly helped. I've had a bit of support from guys who have been doing it for years. I've been pretty lucky to get some pretty big gigs from some of the bigger promoters so that has helped get the PWD name out there. And there are some great kids out there in Melbourne who are really into their music and really love a good party too, which makes it easier.

TS. I love that you've got a bit of that old school ethos of being able to drop nearly any kind of tune in a set. It's a very refreshing way of playing and one that isn't that easy to pull off successfully. Any programming tips for some of our readers who might be still learning the ropes?

P. It's funny you should say, as I don't do a lot of programming. I generally think of somewhere I'd like to get to, and then just wing it. I think that some people are a bit safe with their approach to DJing. It's easy to say, but don't be afraid of clearing the dancefloor. I figure too many people are safe with what they do, and that lends itself to boring DJing.

TS. I have to ask about Gutterhype too. Controlling the flow of bass music in to the city is a pretty powerful position...how do you set the grading for what makes the cut and what doesn't? And what's been the biggest tune in the shop so far this year?

P. There's a few guys who do the orders, and it's really down to personal preference most of the time. It's been really good having this opportunity, I have to take my hat off to Rob for going against the grain and starting a proper record store at a time when the retail industry is suffering, let alone the pretty niche market of dancefloor vinyl. Probably one of the biggest tunes that I've noticed coming through has been the first Untzz Twelve Inch EP, we got 7 copies in and they were gone in about a week.

TS. Fünf and PWD have been responsible for some really nice shows, any acts you can let us in on that are gonna be heading this way soon.

P. Well PWD is taking a break for the second half of the year, as I head overseas in August, but Fünf have a stack of parties coming up. In the next few weeks we have Cosmin TRG, Genius Of Time, The Revenge, and Jeff Mills. Then later on in the year Robert Hood and Len Faki on the techno tip, as well as Siopsis and Eelke Kleijn. And we've got some killer stuff lined up for early next year but you'll just have to wait to hear the details on that ;)

TS. And how about your own gigs, where can we catch your good self playing?

P. This Saturday night/Sunday morning I'll be at a new after hours party at Lounge, called Pleasure Planet. We launched this one a few weeks ago, and it was a killer party so I can't wait for that. I'm on cleaning up duties, from 8-10 on Sunday morning, so who knows whats going to happen really? Next week I'm at New Guernica on Friday 24th, with some of my favourite DJs at the moment, then Queens Birthday (June 9) at the Bottom End for the one and only Jeff Mills.

Tenement Sound - AC23

Make the people them know...

Running wild on the mix this month is Melbourne bass don AC23, a man who's been a heavy hitter of the scene for more than a minute now. Holding it down in all camps of bass from jungle through to garage and dubstep, a night out with AC at the controls means you're gonna be in for a solid taste of tunes mixed inna proper swift style. Reggae culture and pirate sensibilities play a big time part in his mixing and tune selection...it's all about quick blends and cuts, truly legit djing. This one's bang on the money too, loads of grime, garage and absolute sub bass ruffage. Hype yourself!

A few words from AC23...

TS. Tell us a bit about this mega record collection of yours. 3000 deep is a solid amount of wax to be carting around, must be some absolute gems in there! How'd you get started with collecting tunes and what are some of your favourites?

AC. I don't recall, probably a progression. I've always had lots of music around of various formats. Most of my favourites are my UK hip hop stuff - Micall Parknsun, Jehst, YNR stuff, Braintax. My most played records out past and present are Loefah - Goat Stare / Root, Panagea - Hex, Pulse X, Mala - Lean Forward, Kahn - Dread.

TS. There seems to be quite a resurgence in the popularity of vinyl again. Plenty of people getting into it and some great new stores opening up. How do you think this affects the scene in general...positive growth?

AC. Yea man, more records the better hopefully.

TS. And where can the heads catch you around town?

AC. This Friday on the Heartical HiFi with RSD and Saturday, May 4 at Heavy Innit!!

Tenement Sound - D.Y.P

First guest mix of the year for the Tenement Sound podcast series and to set the tone we've got D.Y.P bringing some deep west coast flavour and oh so right grooves. You might have caught his sets on SubFM, a heady mix of old and new house and garage flavours, flavours that have certainly found their way into his own productions. His latest release on L2S, a collab with another Perth bwoy Rekab, is a slightly more militant affair heavy on the 808 and re-cut vocals that slips in nicely along side cuts of funky and new school bass alike. It's this great taste in music that has also seen some massive gigs and supports lately with what must surely be one of the biggest highlights landing a slot on the taste making phenomena The Boiler Room show! Make sure you jump over to his Soundcloud to keep up with fresh bits but for now check the interview and kick back with the D.Y.P mixtape. Fiyah!

Interview with D.Y.P

TS. First up congrats on the busy summer...you've had a couple of really nice releases on L2S and Bass Machine along with a pretty crazy score, playing the Boiler Room gig! Can you tell us a bit about the releases first of all? I've noticed you do seem to have a very identifiable and personal sound across your tunes, really popping drums and quite a slick production ethos. It reminds me somewhat of old Wookie style beats, silky smooth but still got that tough yardie edge. Do you have a particular sound in mind when you're writing or do you more just go with the vibe and see what happens?

D. Cheers man!! Yeah the Boiler Room gig was wicked fun, I really enjoyed myself and I think everyone who performed did Perth proud! As far as the releases go, I had an EP drop on L2S at the end of 2012, a collaborative affair with another Perth based producer, Rekab. We're both really happy with that release, it's a bit harder edged than a lot of my other stuff, but it was a lot of fun to write and even more fun to play out. Other than that I had a 2-track EP come out on Slime Recordings in October that was really well received, hopefully I'll be able to put out some more stuff with them later in the year, Slime are doing some amazing things at the moment and they've got some really exciting stuff in the pipeline too.

As far as my tunes go I kind of just sit down and put down what I'm feeling at that particular time. I'm really pleased you like the sound of the tracks, being likened to Wookie is definitely one of the best compliments I've received about them! I'm a big fan of intricate and complex percussion and drums, so I guess I try and put a little bit of that in my tracks. I'd probably consider the drum programming in 'Torn and Submerged'  by Pinch and Shackleton as the apex of what I'd like to be able to achieve, although I'm definitely still not there yet haha!

TS. How did the Boiler Room gig come about? Unfortunately we lost the feed just before your set but it looked like a proper party was kicking off in there.

D. Yeah that was a real bummer, we were in the middle of a hell big heatwave in Perth and apparently it got so hot in the room that the broadcast modem just carked it. It absolutely went off though!! Finger's crossed the footage will be put up in the near future. That gig was hooked up by a couple of promoters here in Perth as far as I'm aware, I pretty much just got told I was playing at it haha
It was so much fun, as I said above, everyone killed it and the vibes were just amazing. It was a wicked feeling actually, Djing and being surrounded by people, really different vibes from being up on a stage, but I definitely dug it though!

TS. What's going on with the Perth scene in general? Everyone knows about the bigger electronic acts that have come out of there in the past few years but are there any up and comers we need to keep our eye on?

D. The Perth scene at the moment is just amazing, there's a few promoters in particular, guys like Clunk from ICSSC, who are really pushing new sounds and we've got such a tight-knit group of DJs, producers and music lovers here. Its pretty much at the point where we've got a different international over every weekend, and that's without including all the awesome locals nights that are getting put on as well. As far as local acts to keep an eye on, where to begin?! We've got Leon Osborne, Reece Walker and Emerald Cabal, James Ireland, Graduate, Nary Guman, Mike Midnight, Savoir, Rekab, Raaghe, Zeke, Kit Pop, Ta-ku, Everyteen, Nebula, Ylem, the list goes on.....

TS. And what about for D.Y.P? What's your year looking like for releases and gigs? A tour over to the East Coast perhaps?

D. Yeah I'm just playing this year by ear, I'm trying to get a bit more stuff written and such and I should hopefully have a few more releases coming out towards the middle of the year. Gig-wise there's always loads going on, in fact I'm pretty hyped to be supporting Julio Bashmore and T Williams on the 8th of March, going back to back with the baddest of badmen, Clunk. As far as a tour to the east coast goes, nothing planned yet, but who knows? Maybe I can rustle something up towards the end of the year haha!

Tenement Sound Top Ten of 2012

Counting down the big ones!
I love going back over all the tunes I've collected throughout the year, heaps of bangers and some really fresh sounds but with so many great records it's quite difficult narrowing it down to a top ten. After much careful thought I've managed to break it down to my ten favourites. This year there has been a massive resurgence in the 90's house sound with loads of great bouncey 909 numbers doing the rounds (means my record collection is finally coming back into fashion ha ha) and there's certainly a hint of that flavour running through the top ten. Also got some great forward thinking bass music in there as well as tracks that are just at home in the lounge room as they are in the club.
Thanks for listening, I hope you enjoy the countdown and stay locked for some unbelievable guest mixes in 2013!

Tenement Sound - Brookwise

Taming Turtles Mixtape

Usually I give the new Tenement mixes to my designer to listen to before creating the artwork near the end of each month.  This time we've tried something a little different though. I was given the artwork first so I had to draw inspiration from the image and....here it is....the taming turtles mixtape, so expect plenty of deep sea shanties and submarine sub-bass.
Now get out there and tame those leather backs!
