Coming forth from the shadows, frequenting the hazier side of technology...
PWD is at the controls.
Interview with PWD
TS. The Public Works is certainly gaining a stronger and
stronger presence every year. What's been the key in helping you stand out in a
somewhat over saturated party market.
P. I think there's been a few things. Techno's been on the up
around the world, so that has certainly helped. I've had a bit of support from
guys who have been doing it for years. I've been pretty lucky to get some
pretty big gigs from some of the bigger promoters so that has helped get the
PWD name out there. And there are some great kids out there in Melbourne who
are really into their music and really love a good party too, which makes it
easier.
TS. I love that you've got a bit of that old school ethos of being
able to drop nearly any kind of tune in a set. It's a very refreshing way of
playing and one that isn't that easy to pull off successfully. Any programming
tips for some of our readers who might be still learning the ropes?
P. It's funny you should say, as I don't do a lot of
programming. I generally think of somewhere I'd like to get to, and then just
wing it. I think that some people are a bit safe with their approach to DJing.
It's easy to say, but don't be afraid of clearing the dancefloor. I figure too
many people are safe with what they do, and that lends itself to boring DJing.
TS. I have to ask about Gutterhype too. Controlling the flow
of bass music in to the city is a pretty powerful position...how do you set the
grading for what makes the cut and what doesn't? And what's been the biggest
tune in the shop so far this year?
P. There's a few guys who do the orders, and it's really down
to personal preference most of the time. It's been really good having this
opportunity, I have to take my hat off to Rob for going against the grain and
starting a proper record store at a time when the retail industry is suffering,
let alone the pretty niche market of dancefloor vinyl. Probably one of the
biggest tunes that I've noticed coming through has been the first Untzz Twelve
Inch EP, we got 7 copies in and they were gone in about a week.
TS. Fünf and PWD have been responsible for some really nice
shows, any acts you can let us in on that are gonna be heading this way soon.
P. Well PWD is taking a break for the second half of the year,
as I head overseas in August, but Fünf have a stack of parties coming up. In
the next few weeks we have Cosmin TRG, Genius Of Time, The Revenge, and Jeff
Mills. Then later on in the year Robert Hood and Len Faki on the techno tip, as
well as Siopsis and Eelke Kleijn. And we've got some killer stuff lined up for
early next year but you'll just have to wait to hear the details on that ;)
TS. And how about your own gigs, where can we catch your good
self playing?
P. This Saturday night/Sunday morning I'll be at a new after
hours party at Lounge, called Pleasure Planet. We launched this one a few weeks
ago, and it was a killer party so I can't wait for that. I'm on cleaning up
duties, from 8-10 on Sunday morning, so who knows whats going to happen really?
Next week I'm at New Guernica on Friday 24th, with some of my favourite DJs at
the moment, then Queens Birthday (June 9) at the Bottom End for the one and
only Jeff Mills.
